Winter 2025 – 2026 Farm Update
Winter settled in quietly at Shepherd’s Hill Ranch, bringing slower days and time to focus on projects that support the coming seasons. While the fields rested under frosty mornings and colder weather, there was still plenty happening around the farm and farmhouse.

What’s Happening on the Farm
Winter months often bring important maintenance work across the farm. This season included repairs and improvements around the pond, including leveling work as well as adding a dock and small bridge to the pond island.
Several infrastructure projects also continued through the winter months. Utility poles were brought in for future livestock shelters and to help complete additional fencing across the property. Work also continued on the farm’s water system, including plumbing improvements and preparation for a waterline from the pond that will support watering needs across pastures and irrigating the orchard.
As colder weather settled in, new rhythms were established for caring for the livestock. Hay was purchased and rolled out across the pastures to keep them well fed throughout the winter months, and wood was cut and stacked to keep the farm quarters warm.
The orchard also received attention during the quieter season, with trimming and fresh mulch laid to support healthy growth in the coming year.

Life Around the Farmhouse
Winter also brought time for family and slower moments at home. The holidays were filled with gatherings, warm meals, and time spent together in the new farmhouse. Santa made his visit, and small holiday gifts from the farm kitchen were prepared and shared with neighbors.
In the kitchen, the colder season meant more time for cooking and baking. Tomato sauce was canned, sourdough bakes continued, and even a few sourdough pizzas made their way onto the table.
Between busy days, there were also quiet winter moments, including frosting mornings, afternoon cat naps, and porch swing snuggles as we settled more deeply into life at the farmhouse.
A winter storm kept everyone close to home for nearly a week, offering a reminder of the slower pace that winter sometimes brings.

Looking Ahead
Even in winter, the next growing season is already on the horizon. Garden preparations have begun as the farm looks ahead to spring planting, longer daylight hours, and more time spent working outdoors.
With warmer days quickly approaching, the coming months will bring new growth in the garden, fresh blossoms across the orchard, and plenty more sourdough bakes coming from the farmhouse kitchen.
